Attacked by his father-in-law (2)

MONDAY.

W.S. EVANS and C.H. CORBETT, Esqrs. present.

Thomas Belcher, whose black eye indicated his inheritance of the pugilistic qualities associated with his name, was charged by James Matthews, his son-in-law with an assault.

Matthews said that on Sunday night his father-in-law came to his house and seizing the snuffers threatened to stab him with them, and was evidently bent on giving him a quietus, had not his wife interposed and prevented him, by which she received a stab in her arm, he then caught up the tongs and made another attack, which terminated in both parties rolling over in the passage till they were separated.

Belcher said his daughters were encouraged in idleness at Matthews’s house, and an angry recriminatory scene commenced, which was stopped by the Magistrates ordering Belcher to find two sureties of £10 each, to keep the peace for six months and his own bond of £20.
