Death of Norman Titterington, 1902

Context Note: The deceased’s mother, Mrs Ellen (Couchman) Titterington, was first-cousin of Laurinda (Timblick) Brander of London.

YORKSHIRE COLLEGE STUDENT’S SAD END.

Mr. Norman Titterington, son of the Rev. W. T. Titterington, Principal of the Fulneck Schools, has met his death by drowning whilst on a holiday visit in Scotland.

The news reached Pudsey on Friday, August 1st. The Rev. W. T. and Mrs. Titterington had only left Fulneck that morning on a visit to Filey. Immediately on receipt of the sad news Mr. Titterington left for Scotland.

It seems that young Mr. Titterington was staying at a students’ camp at Mertoun, near St. Boswell’s. On Friday morning he went to bathe in the Tweed, and was drowned at a place where the river is fast-flowing and deep, with treacherous currents in places. The body was recovered by a diver from Leith, and taken to Fulneck, where the funeral took place on Tuesday last.

Mr. Titterington was only 21 years of age, and a few weeks ago he passed his final examination for the B.A. degree at the Yorkshire College, Leeds.
