Ill-treating a cow

CRUELTY CASES – John Burton and Charles Bosworth were summoned for cruelly ill-treating a cow at Ockbrook on the 31st May. – A lad named Pearce stated that on the day in question he saw the defendant running a cow down Gipsy-lane at Ockbrook. Bosworth had hold of the cow’s tail, and was thumping it with his fist. Burton was striking the cow across the ribs with a stick. The cow belonged to witness’ father, and had had to be kept up since in consequence of the ill-treatment to which it was subjected. – The defendants denied the charge, and said that they were merely trying to turn the cow back as it was going in a wrong direction. – They were each fined £1 and costs.
